Software Defined Networking is software that creates your network on demand. It refers to two boxes, i.e. The black and white boxes. The controller will contain the entire control plane. The controller will also provide a flow table for all switches that your data plane uses. Infrastructure is required to support new operational models.
Cisco ACI is one of the elements in SDxCentral’s series that explains the Cisco ACI framework and how it’s the Cisco SDN Solution. Cisco ACI is a new data center architecture that addresses the needs of traditional networks as well as the rising demands of new computing trends and business factors.
Cisco’s Application Centric Infrastructure approach focuses on the most important thing in the data-center: applications. Because that is what ultimately drives business value, we use the data center to support the applications and the data they produce.
Cisco ACI supports software overlays that either run on top of the Cisco ACI fabric, or terminate on it. The user has the option to choose how to deploy workloads in one of the two modes of deployment. Cisco ACI doesn’t rely on software-based overlays in order to achieve the agility and flexibility required by SDN.
There are three main tasks to complete when implementing an overlay. They were all used in the instance.
First, it should be possible to forward packets across the network. This is possible using traditional networking mechanisms.
A second requirement is a mapping database that allows for the location of an application or device to be looked up. The result can then be used to encapsulate the packet.
Third, the mapping database must be updated in a way that is easy to use. Incorrect information in the mapping database could result in packets being sent to an incorrect location and most likely dropped.

Cisco ACI introduces group-based policy as a way to explain connectivity in the datacenter. The end user can determine how certain “things”, or “things”, connect to other “things”, in the data center by abstracting the policy intent.
Another common feature of many SDN architectures is the use of overlay networking technologies. Overlay networks are a way to create logical networks that can then be used by edge devices and applications. These are some of the benefits of overlay network:
They can provide logical layer-2 adjacency, without the need to create physically adjacent layer-2 network. This is especially useful when multi-datacenter environments require logical layer-2 connectivity across layer-3 boundaries.
Some tunneling technologies offer more layer-2 networks than VLANs (which typically have only 4000 segments).
Because there is no need to interact with the physical network, network provisioning and orchestration can be performed faster and more efficiently.
Cloud computing is a significant transformation in the IT industry. With BYOD, IT-as-a-service, big data and security becoming more prominent concerns, cloud computing is a key part of this. Increasing IT agility and reducing IT spending are two of the many goals organizations have.
